Abstract

The focus of this work is to study voice on contemporaneity. In particular, it investigates the challenges that singers face when dealing with a contemporary vocal repertoire for concerts. Generally speaking, conservatories and universities that teach Music in Brazil have not incorporated contemporary vocal music in their teaching programs. Such situation makes it difficult for the singer to find references when singing such repertoire. With this in mind, this work has as a goal to contribute to the development of a knowledge hub about vocality in concert music from the 20th and the 21th centuries. The methodological steps were: a bibliographical review for a better understanding of the social and historical factors that have fostered the appearance of this music genre; a review of sheet music from composers like Berio, Ligeti, John Cage, among others, to understand which vocal resources are demanded in these pieces; the practice of a contemporary vocal repertoire together with the group Ateliê Coletivo, from the State University of Minas Gerais; an experimentation of collaboration with a composer in the process of writing a contemporary vocal piece; and interviews with the singer Eládio Pèrez-Gonzales and the composer Rafael Felício, for a better comprehension on how the singer deals with the contemporary repertoire and to understand how the creative process was structured in the process of creation of the piece Aurora. This way, the work was organized to generate a dissertation with three chapters and a section entitled “Interlúdio”, besides bringing an audiovisual catalogue with extended techniques for the voice.
