ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ПЕРЕКЛАДУ АНГЛІЙСЬКИХ АКАДЕМІЧНИХ ТЕРМІНІВ УКРАЇНСЬКОЮ МОВОЮ

Abstract

The translation problem of the terms from English into Ukrainian and vice versa remains one of the most relevant in modern translation studies. The relevance of studying means and problems associated with the translation of academic terms is due to the expansion of cooperation between Ukrainian and foreign partner universities and the growing volume of communication in this professional area. A prerequisite for communication at a high school is to know and use academic terminology at the professional level. The article highlights the features of domestic and foreign academic terms used in the international communication space, and the identification of adequate options for their translation. Academic terms are to be interpreted as terms used in higher education in the field of higher professional education and higher education institutions. The translation of English academic terms to name educational institutions, their structural subdivisions, titles of teaching staff positions, titles of leading positions, titles of educational and scientific degrees is investigated. It is proved that Ukrainian academic term «факультет» should be translated into English by the term «Faculty», the term «кафедра» – «department». The following translations should be used to name the titles of Ukrainian teaching staff position: «lecturer» – «викладач», «senior lecturer» – «старший викладач», «associate professor» – «доцент» і «professor» – «професор», to name the titles of leading positions: «rector» – «ректор», «vice-rector» або «deputy rector» – «про-ректор», «декан факультету» – «Dean of Faculty» і «завідувач кафедри» – «Head of Department», to name titles of educational and scientific degrees: «бакалавріат» studies», «магістратура» – «master’s studies», «аспірантура» – «PhD studies», «докторантура» – «higher doctoral studies», «кандидат наук» – «PhD», «доктор наук» – «DSc» (doctor of science).
