El Fundamento Que No Aparece: Hume, la Invariancia y el yo

Abstract

Este ensayo reconsidera la crítica de David Hume a la identidad personal aceptando su observación central mientras rechaza su conclusión. Hume encuentra únicamente percepciones en la introspección y nunca al yo que las posee. A partir del concepto de invariancia bajo transformación, el ensayo sostiene que el fundamento del yo es precisamente el tipo de realidad que la introspección no puede encontrar porque no es uno de los contenidos cambiantes sino aquello respecto de lo cual el cambio es reconocido como cambio. El argumento desarrolla la distinción entre montón y estructura, presenta al yo como referencia invariante dentro de la transformación y muestra por qué el fracaso de Hume al encontrar el yo es exactamente lo que dicha estructura predice. A continuación sostiene que incluso un yo estructurado sigue siendo contingente y, por tanto, incapaz de explicar su propia existencia. La conclusión es que la contingencia del yo estructurado apunta más allá de cualquier invariancia meramente interna hacia una realidad no derivada.
