Pierwotny ryt Paschy w świetle schematu literackiego Księgi Wyjścia 1–18

Abstract

This doctoral dissertation examines the original rite of the Passover in the light of the literary scheme of the Book of Exodus 1–18. The work consists of an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The first chapter is devoted to identifying the fundamental literary structure of Exod 1–18; the second examines whether this structure corresponds to the ancient pattern of an account of covenant-making; and the third analyzes the fourteen-element Passover rite on the basis of the Passover Haggadah, with special attention to its four-part structure connected with the four ritual cups. The main thesis of the dissertation is that Exod 1–18 forms a coherent six-part literary structure corresponding to the ancient pattern of a covenant-making treaty. The two outer pericopes frame the whole: a historical prologue and a concluding pericope presenting the realization of the effects of the covenant. The four central pericopes of the treaty describe the four stages of the covenant-making ceremony between God and Israel, realized in historical reality as part of the Exodus from Egypt. Within this structure, Israel’s passage through the divided waters of the Sea of Reeds constitutes the act of making a covenant — a covenant made earlier than the covenant at Mount Sinai. The dissertation further demonstrates that the four main parts of the Passover rite form a sequence corresponding to the four stages of the covenant-making ceremony described in the four central pericopes of the treaty in Exod 1–18. Each successive part of the rite makes the participants of the Passover present within the corresponding historical event of this sequence; thus, the Passover Seder constitutes an instrument established by God for granting participation in the covenant-making ceremony accomplished once and unrepeatably in history — the ceremony described in Exod 6:2–15:21. The dissertation further reveals the deep connection between the customs of the Passover Seder and the realities of the Exodus from Egypt, including an original morphological analysis of the Hebrew word אֲפִיקוֹמָן (afikoman: "its bed is manna"), consistent with the literary structure analysis: the afikoman is not a symbol of the Passover lamb, but of the unleavened bread — similar in taste to manna — baked from the unleavened dough which the Israelites carried on their shoulders during the Exodus from Egypt and the passage along the bed of the Sea of Reeds. This study relies on a synchronic canonical analysis of the biblical text, supported by a computer-based morphological analysis conducted using BibleWorks 6.0.
