Using baited remote underwater videos (BRUV) and interviews with knowledge holders to assess reef passage fish species around Ovalau island, Fiji, in 2025.

Abstract

The described research was part of SOCPacific2R. The project designs its research activities using an empirical inter- and transdisciplinary approach combining natural and social science methods, and focusing on reef passages in Fiji and New Caledonia. The main aim of this particular study was to assess reef passage fish diversity and abundance around Ovalau Island, Fiji, using baited remote underwater videos (BRUVs) in reef passages and integrating local ecological knowledge (LEK) gained from semi-structured interviews with fishermen. BRUV-derived species records were subsequently compared with interview-derived species lists to assess congruence between ecological ‘snapshot’ observations and LEK. The report describes how these two methods were applied and how they complemented each other. The attached results from the two methods highlight the knowledge gained from each individual and the combined methods.
