English description: The 1989 essay "Free Spirit and the University" examines the profound crisis of the modern university, which has transitioned from a community seeking universal truth to a fragmented "pluriversity" focused on narrow specialization and professional training. The author argues that universities have lost their connection to the "whole" (the universe) by becoming factories for graduates serving state and societal needs. Drawing on Comenius, the text posits that true knowledge involves understanding reality in tension with how it "ought to be," aiming for rectification. Philosophy is identified as the vital discipline capable of maintaining this relationship with the whole, acting not as an ideology but as a "knowing ignorance" and a love for truth. Ultimately, the university is defined as a necessary institutionalization of the freedom of spirit.
