Hellenistic Lead Miniature Furniture from Patara: An Assessment of Domestic and Cultic Contexts

Abstract

Excavations at the Tepecik Settlement, located north of Patara, have uncovered two Early Hellenistic lead miniature pieces of furniture, a kline and a table. Miniature objects, widely produced in antiquity, fulfilled different roles depending on their archaeological context, at times they were interpreted as toys, at times as votive offerings or ritual objects, and at times as small-scale representations of daily life. Within this general framework, the finds from Patara, particularly the table, provide new evidence for this multifunctionality. The spatial contexts of the finds offer valuable clues about their possible functions. The kline, discovered in a gynaikonitis (women’s quarter), can be interpreted as a toy in a domestic context. The miniature table, on the other hand, was recovered from the integrated kitchen and storage context; the relief of a grape cluster on its surface may point to a ‘domestic cult’ practice associated with wishes for abundance and prosperity, or alternatively to a Dionysiac dedication. Within this framework, the present study not only adds new examples to the limited repertoire of Hellenistic lead miniature furniture but also emphasizes the methodological importance of contextual analysis in interpreting such objects.
