THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE UGLY IN LITERATURE

Abstract

This article examines the dichotomy of beauty (harmony, ideal, spiritual light, hope) and ugliness (ugliness, violence, sin, chaos) as a fundamental foundation of world literature. Through the contrast between these categories, writers from antiquity to the 20th century reveal the contradictions of human nature and society, achieving catharsis—purification through empathy.
