A New Tool for Art Research: The First Iteration of the Pharos Platform

Abstract

Pharos is an international consortium of thirteen art historical photo archives based in North America and Europe. Its mission is to develop a unified digital research platform that provides comprehensive access to digitized images and corresponding scholarly documentation from member institutions—thus significantly advancing collection, provenance, and art market research. To date, the consortium has digitized, cataloged, and reconciled approximately 10 percent of the more than 31 million images and associated metadata collectively held by its members. The platform’s initial release, scheduled for October 2025, will make this first body of material publicly accessible. Designed as a dynamic and evolving resource, the platform will expand as institutions continue to digitize their holdings and regularly contribute new content. The consortium also aims to broaden its membership to include partners from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, thereby enriching the global and cultural scope of the project. A key feature of Pharos is its capacity to enable comparative research across diverse archives. Photo archives encode specific cultural and historical perspectives—shaping definitions of art, its creation, and its audiences. This raises critical questions of authorship and authority: Who built these collections, for whom, and to what ends? Who will participate in shaping them moving forward? Beyond offering access to millions of images and detailed metadata, the platform opens up valuable insights into the historiography and methodologies of the art historical field itself. This poster will introduce the first iteration of the Pharos platform, outlining its development, features, scope, and the challenges encountered during its creation. Our goal is to raise awareness of this innovative tool and support its ongoing growth and impact. Dieses Poster ist für die Tagung "Digital Turn.
