Abstract

Quantification is one of the keys, but also one of the problems, to the study of ceramic assemblages. It is a useful, necessary, and crucial technique to understand archaeological contexts. Existing quantification methods present as many pros as cons, leading sometimes to important distortions in the counts or to the non-comparability of different contexts and research programmes. The solution goes through combined quantitative studies that merges several accessible, replicable, and reproducible analytical techniques. This work presents several variables and correcting methodologies, such as the weight of individuals and ceramic fragments, together with basic statistics and tools from the digital humanities. This quantification methodology can be applied with success to serialised ceramic productions from the medieval and the early modern ages.
