The Impact of Hypnosis on Athletic Performance and Mental Preparation

The Impact of Hypnosis on Athletic Performance and Mental Preparation

Abstract

This widespread applicability underscores the physiological and psychological underpinnings of performance across diverse domains, extending beyond traditional athletic endeavors. This necessitates a comprehensive understanding of how psychological states, such as those induced by hypnosis, modulate physiological responses and cognitive functions essential for optimal execution in various performance-based activities (Zahedi et al., 2024). Indeed, while physical conditioning and technical skills remain fundamental, psychological factors are increasingly recognized as pivotal in achieving peak performance in competitive sports (Bedir et al., 2025). Modern sports psychology emphasizes the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, and physical aspects, highlighting the critical role of mental fortitude and psychological resilience in athletic success (Gandrapu & Rakesh, 2024). This perspective acknowledges that an athlete's ability to maintain focus, manage stress, and adapt to adversity significantly influences their capacity to perform at elite levels (Galily et al., 2024). Consequently, interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive abilities like self-assurance, drive, concentration, and perseverance are integral to maximizing an athlete's potential (Gandrapu & Rakesh, 2024). Among these interventions, mental skills training, including techniques like imagery, is acknowledged as crucial for psychological preparation, enabling athletes to fully realize their potential even in high-pressure situations (Volgemute et al., 2025) (Gandrapu & Rakesh, 2024).
