Abstract

Excavations of a Public Space at the Torreon Sector of the Purum Llacta Archaeological Site in Cheto, Amazonas, Peru. During pre-professional internships in the archaeological research project “Architectural Spaces in the Torreon Sector at Purum Llacta of Cheto,” three trenches were excavated east of the main square, identifying a secondary public space, possibly a courtyard. Boundary walls, an access with steps to the west, a bench to the east, and structures typical of the Chachapoyas culture were found, along with funerary contexts with reburials and ceramic fragments from the Kuelap phase. Analysis indicates that this space was used for banquets controlled by the elite and that the courtyard retained its symbolic value, later serving as a burial area.
