The object was examined using the Beinos Method — a structured question-and-answer protocol for visual, tactile, and microstructural diagnostics. Observations included precise measurements, glaze characteristics, body color, firing marks, absence of crackle, and microstructural features such as anorthite crystallites in a calcium–alkaline glaze matrix. The piece shows all key features of authentic Ding ware: thin body walls (2–4 mm), creamy-white to slightly ivory glaze with unglazed firing rim, paired elliptical spur marks on the base with fused quartz grains, and characteristic glaze overflow. The vessel's restrained elegance, manufacturing defect on the base with natural patina, and lack of market-oriented embellishment argue against modern reproduction. Comparative references to documented museum Ding ware pieces support the attribution. The study underscores the effectiveness of the Beinos Method in authenticating monochrome Song ceramics through systematic questioning, combined with visual–tactile assessment and microstructural observation. Introduction Ding ware (定窑) of the Northern Song dynasty represents one of the most refined achievements of Chinese ceramic technology. Produced in Zhizhou (modern Quyang, Hebei Province), Ding ware is recognized for its thinly potted porcelain bodies, ivory-toned glazes, and characteristic unglazed rims supported on firing spurs. This technical choice allowed glazes to flow evenly without adhering to the sagger walls, leaving paired spur marks on the base.The present study focuses on a rare tall vase form with carved lotus leaf motif — a shape less commonly encountered than bowls or dishes in surviving Ding ware. The goal is to determine authenticity and precise dating within the early Northern Song period, using the Beinos Method protocol. 2.
