Tarihten Bugüne Türkçede Alfabe-Dil Uyumu

Orthographic-Phonetic Compatibility in Turkish: A Historical Overview of Alphabet Use

Tarihten Bugüne Türkçede Alfabe-Dil Uyumu

Abstract

Anahtar Kelimeler: Türk Dili, Alfabe Değişimi, Yazı Sistemi, Kültürel Etki ABSTRACT Throughout history, Turks have inhabited diverse geographical regions and engaged with various civilizations, leading to the adoption of multiple writing systems over time. This study explores five major scripts historically used by Turkic peoples — the Köktürk, Uighur, Arabic, Cyrillic, and Latin alphabets — by examining their historical evolution and phonological compatibility with the Turkish language. The reasons for adopting each script are analyzed within their respective political, religious, and cultural contexts. The findings indicate that the Köktürk and Uighur alphabets, both regarded as early national scripts, exhibit the highest degree of phonetic alignment with Turkish. The Arabic script, introduced following the Turks’ conversion to Islam, led to orthographic inconsistencies due to a lack of one-to-one correspondence between letters and sounds. Although modifications were introduced to accommodate Turkish phonemes, these were only partially effective. The Cyrillic script, imposed during the Soviet era, further disrupted linguistic unity among Turkic communities despite adaptations to individual dialects. In contrast, the Latin alphabet, adopted after the establishment of the Republic of Türkiye, facilitated phonological transparency, simplification, and standardization in Turkish orthography. Overall, the study highlights the alphabet as a dynamic and historically contingent medium, shaped by sociopolitical forces and linguistic needs.
