Il Casentino delle pievi, dei castelli e dei borghi

Abstract

Pievi, castelli e borghi sono tra gli elementi caratterizzanti del territorio del Casentino, per la loro presenza diffusa nelle valli solcate da torrenti e a margine del bacino di fondovalle, dove scorre l’Arno. Testimonianze di epoca etrusco-romana denotano la rilevanza di questa area fino dall’antichità, ma è con l’incastellamento del Medioevo che si gettano le basi dell’attuale sistema insediativo. Il contributo prende in esame alcuni aspetti delle principali pievi, ripercorrendone le fasi salienti, dall’originaria costruzione, alle modificazioni occorse nel tempo che hanno portato a costruire edifici ancora pi􀎆 ambiziosi, oppure attuate a seguito di eventi disastrosi come i terremoti. Dei borghi e castelli si tratteggiano le vicende fondative legate al lungo periodo di dominio dei Guidi, fino al loro definitivo declino con l’imporsi del potere di Arezzo e, soprattutto, di Firenze nei secoli che seguono il Medioevo. Resterà sempre stretto il rapporto tra sistemi fortificati e abitati, con i primi che vanno gradualmente a diminuire di importanza, talvolta mantenendo evidente la connotazione dell’antica funzione di difesa, in altri casi risultano ridotti a frammenti fagocitati dall’accrescersi dell’abitare nei borghi.
