Paco de Lucía’s use of rhythmic traits in his compositions in the style of bulerías reveal an evolution since his encountered with North American jazz pianist Chick Corea. Besides being responsible for this rhythmic evolution, De Lucía introduced the practice of improvisation to later generations of flamenco musicians. Some of these indirect contributions to the nuevo flamenco movement can be explained as a “creative missreading.” The transcriptions and analyses included in this study unveil not only some concepts that help clarifying flamenco jazz and nuevo flamenco’s history and identity, but inform the reader about the musical and creative possibilities for the future.
