Będąc dla Boga - być dla innych. O Johnie Henrym Newmanie

Abstract

Właśnie dlatego, oprócz czytelników, zaskarbił sobie wiele ludzkich serc, żyjąc pokornie i z dystansem do wielu wydarzeń i samego siebie. Żył według dewizy ze swojego kardynalskiego herbu: „Serce ku sercu przemawia” („Cor ad cor loquitur”).

John Henry Newman (1801 – 1890) was the eminent person in 19th-century England and the man, who affected the theology, philosophy and approach to a problem of university education at the time. Newman, as a prose writer and a poet, endeared himself to many regular readers especially through his literary works such as: Apologia pro Vita Sua, An Essay On Development Of Christian Doctrine, An Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent and multitudinous poems – the most famous three (Lead, kindly Light; Praise to the Holiest in the height; Firmly I believe and truly) are sung even today by Christians of different denominations all over the world. John Henry Newman didn’t alight only on intellectual or emotional sphere of human being. Most of all, sanctity emanated from his everyday life. For this reason, he endeared many human hearts as well as readers by his humility – he was restrained from a lot of affairs and himself. He lived under the motto from his cardinal’ coat of arms: ‘Heart speaks unto heart’ (‘Cor ad cor loquitur’).
