Conceitos De Identidade E Métodos Para Seu Estudo

Abstract

Os estudos sociolinguísticos vêm se preocupando, cada vez mais, com aspectos da identidade individual ou social dos falantes, sobretudo em pesquisas que se incluem na chamada “Terceira Onda” (Eckert, 2012). Contudo, nesses estudos, nem sempre se define o conceito de identidade com o qual se opera, e não raro se lança mão da noção de “identidade do falante” como explicação ad hoc para certos comportamentos idiossincráticos de indivíduos específicos na amostra, cujos padrões linguísticos não se encaixam naqueles previstos por amplas categorias sociodemográficas como “sexo”, “escolaridade” e “classe social”. Esta comunicação tem o objetivo de revisar algumas definições do conceito de identidade (p.ex., Mendoza-Denton, 2002; Kiesling, 2013; Battisti, 2014), bem como estudos que dele se valem, com vistas a avaliar sua operacionalização e replicabilidade em pesquisas sociolinguísticas. Os métodos para acessar a(s) identidade(s) dos falantes incluem a observação etnográfica, a formulação de certas perguntas no roteiro da entrevista sociolinguística, a aplicação de questionários, a elaboração de índices com base em critérios pré-estabelecidos, testes de percepção e cuidados no preenchimento da ficha social dos participantes, cada qual com suas vantagens e desvantagens. Em última instância, deve-se reconhecer a natureza fluida e dinâmica das identidades, fato que não impede o pesquisador de buscar métodos menos impressionísticos para o estudo de sua possível influência sobre os padrões de variação linguística.
