Abstract

In this article, I explore the concept of material witness as an important element in understanding the intersection between art and life sciences in the context of the Anthropocene. Inspired by the work of artist Susan Schuppli, I investigate how non-human objects and substances narrate stories of environmental crises and socio-political conflicts, serving as crucial witnesses in an era defined by the human impact on the planet. Through reflection on the work Nature Represents Itself, I propose an interdisciplinary approach that emphasizes the interconnectedness between art, law and science, challenging the traditional boundaries of knowledge. This study aims to reflect on the non-human turn in the arts, proposing an artistic practice that not only dialogues with, but is also formed by the voices of matter, opening up new epistemological and ontological perspectives for rethinking multi-species coexistence and ethical responsibility in the 21st century.
