Abstract

Abstract Due to its geographical location, Merâga was one of the most important cities of the Middle Ages. One of the states that realised this was the Ilkhanids. The conquest of the region by the Ilkhanids took place during the reign of Hülegü Khan (r. 1256-1265) and Merâga was declared the capital and a new state was established. From this moment on, Merâga experienced one of its brightest periods as a city where scientific activities were carried out. In line with this purpose, the Meragha Observatory was established by the order of Hulagu Khan himself and under the leadership of Nasir al-Dīn Tūsī. In addition to being the first observatory supported by foundation revenues, Merâga Observatory also stands out as the sixth largest observatory in the Islamic world. This centre brought together scientists from various geographies and created an important information and research environment. The astronomical instruments discovered in Merâga Observatory have been developed and continue to be used today. With these features, the observatory in question is among the most important observatories of the Islamic World together with Samarkand Observatory. It also inspired many observatories established after it. The observatory, which maintained its importance during the reigns of Abaka Khan (r. 1265-1282), Ghazan Khan (r. 1295-1304) and Öljeitü Khan (r. 1304-1316), lost its former importance as the centre of the Ilkhanid State shifted to Sultaniye.

Özet Merâga dairesi konumu hasebiyle klasik'ın önemli muhafazasından biridir. Bunun bilgisi olan devletlerden biri de İlhanlılar olmuştur. İlhanlıların sürekli olarak geçirmesi Hülegü Han (h. 1256-1265) zamanında gerçekleşmiş ve Merâga başkent ilan edilerek yeni bir devlet kayıt altına alınmıştır. Bu andan itibaren Merâga ilminin yürütüldüğü bir şehir olarak en parlak günün birini yaşamıştır. Merâga Rasathânesi de bu amaçla bizzat Hülegü Han'ın emriyle ve Nasirüddin Tûsî'nin öncülüğünde kurulmuştur. Merâga Rasathânesi, vakıf gelirleriyle birlikte ilk rasathânenin yanı sıra, İslam dünyasındaki hayatların büyük rasathanesi olarak da öne çıkıyor. Bu merkez, çeşitli coğrafyalardan gelen bilim insanlarını bir araya getirerek önemli bir bilgi ve araştırma ortamı oluşturdu. Merâga Rasathânesi'nde keşfedilen astronomi aletleri geliştirilerek günümüzde de gerçekleştirilmeye devam edilmektedir. Söz konusu rasathâne bu özelliklerle klasik'da Semerkand Rasathânesi'yle birlikte İslâm Dünyası'nın en önemli rasathaneleri arasında yer almaktadır. Kendisinden sonra kurulan birçok rasâthaneye de özgün kaynak olmuştur. Abaka Han (h. 1265-1282), Gazan Han (h. 1295-1304) ve Ölceytü Han (h. 1304-1316) döneminde de korumayı koruyan rasathâne, İlhanlı Devleti'nin merkezinin Sultaniye'ye çarpması sonucu eski kaybı kaybetmiştir.
