Seeing Stars Leiden: "Lights out, stars on"

Abstract

Seeing Stars Leiden Op 25 september 2022 heeft in Leiden een bijzonder experiment plaatsgevonden: Seeing Stars Leiden. In de wijde omgeving van de Leidse Oude Sterrewacht gingen een uur lang alle lichten uit. Hoe meer lichten er gedoofd werden, hoe minder lichtvervuiling en hoe meer sterren we dus konden zien aan het hemelgewelf. Rondom Seeing Stars Leiden was er van alles te doen. Vragen die werden opgeroepen met dit project en het concept “lichten uit”, waren: Welke sterren kunnen wij zien en hoeveel?, Waar zit in Leiden de lichtvervuiling?, Voelen wij ons veiliger met veel licht?, Hebben we last van teveel licht?, Hoe beïnvloeden wij de natuur met ons kunstlicht?, Hoe ervaren wij het donker?. Vragen die samenhangen met astronomie, natuur en milieu, welzijn, cultuur en veiligheid en meer! Margaret Gold, coordinator van Citizen Science, zegt het volgende over Seeing Stars Leiden: "De avond van Seeing Stars Leiden was een geweldige ervaring, die we met velen uit de stad beleefd hebben. Bewoners, ondernemers, de gemeente en partners van Seeing Stars Leiden hebben dit mogelijk gemaakt. Veel mensen waren verbaasd om te zien hoeveel lichten er niet uitgingen, en hoe vele van de lichten onnodig waren. We willen graag verder met het meten van lichtvervuiling, om te zien waar de meeste lichtvervuiling in de omgeving is en om te kijken waar de lichten uitkunnen. Door jullie metingen kunnen we dit gesprek voortzetten, ondersteund door data!"
