This white paper focuses on the ongoing global efforts to develop and standardize 6G networks, aiming for a launch around 2030. It highlights the importance of creating a unified 6G vision, driven by key stakeholders worldwide, towards a single global consensus. The European perspective, represented by the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA), is emphasized, showcasing Europe's proactive role in 6G R&D, standardization, and addressing societal, environmental, and economic/business challenges. We outline the technological advancements anticipated in 6G, such as integrated communication and sensing, artificial intelligence support, and advanced cybersecurity. We stress the focus on sustainability, both in making 6G systems themselves sustainable and in using 6G to enhance sustainability across various industries, including media, transportation, and healthcare among othersGlobally, 6G development is driven by key priorities like security, AI, energy efficiency, and ubiquitous coverage. Europe, through its initiatives like the Hexa-X-II project and the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS-JU), has been active in aligning its priorities with global standards and contributing to the 6G vision.Furthermore, we discuss the need for socio-economic considerations in 6G development, including energy efficiency and sustainability goals. We call for integrating sustainability metrics, like Key Value Indicators (KVIs), into the R&D process to ensure that 6G not only meets technical performance targets but also contributes positively to societal and environmental goals. The ultimate aim is to create a 6G network that supports economic growth while minimizing negative sustainability impacts.
