THE CARTOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATIONS IN GEOGRAPHY TEXTBOOKS: MAP ANALYSIS AS A POSSIBILITY OF GEOGRAPHIC REASONING

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the cartographic representations founded in textbooks and the possibility of developing geographical thinking. The selected textbook is the Brazilian 6th Grade volume of the collection "Geografia Geral e do Brasil" by Eustáquio de Sene and José Carlos Moreira, from the publisher Scipione, approved in the National Textbook Plan (PNLD/2020). This collection was adopted in elementary schools in the public school system of Piripá-BA, to be used in the period of 3 years: from 2020 to 2023. Through qualitative documentary study and critical analysis, it was found that most maps contribute to developing geographical thinking as they are presented in a contextualized way within the students' reality and when they motivate students to question and reflect upon space, through the principles of geographical reasoning.
