Andrographis paniculata Nees von Esenbeck 1832

Abstract

Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Wallich ex Nees von Esenbeck (1832: 116) Justicia paniculata Burman (1768: 9). Type:—Rheede, Hort. Malab. 9: 109, t. 56. 1689 (lectotype icon!; designated here). Fig. 4. Discussion:— Burman (1768) described the name Justicia paniculata based on material collected from Zeylona [Sri Lanka], which was housed at Garzin (Garcin) herbarium; in addition he cited Rheede’s plate in Hortus Malabaricus 9: 109, t. 56. 1689 [Cara-Caniram]. According to Stafleu & Cowan (1976) it was found that the original herbarium of Garcin Laurent was destroyed but several sets of specimens collected by him are at G. However, the authors have tried to trace duplicates of Andrographis specimens from Garcin herbarium at G herbarium but could not locate them (pers. comm. from Gautier). Therefore, Rheede’s plate in Hortus Malabaricus 9: t. 56. is selected here as the lectotype for the name J. paniculata.
