As part of a project to catalog the private library of the Hessian privy councillor Johann Maximilian von Günderrode (1713-1784) at the Darmstadt University and State Library, a Bible from 1743 came to light. The place of printing, Germantown, and an ex libris glued into the front cover prompted us to investigate the origin and provenance of the volume in more detail. The following text describes the history of the printing of the Sauer Bibles in the context of the immigration of Germans to Pennsylvania and follows the volume on its way to Germany.
