
Solenodon cubanus Peters 1861 Solenodon cubanus Peters 1861, Monatsb. K. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1861: 169. Type Locality: Cuba, Oriente Prov., Bayamo. Vernacular Names: Cuban Solenodon. Synonyms: Solenodon poeyanus Barbour 1944. Distribution: Extant only in SE Cuba; Late Quaternary and Amerindian sites all over the island (Ottenwalder, 2001:317). Conservation: U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Endangered. Discussion: Sometimes placed in a distinct genus or subgenus, Atopogale, see Hall and Kelson (1959:22) and Hall (1981:22), but see Poduschka and Poduschka (1983:225-238) who regarded Atopogale as a synonym of Solenodon.
