Synonyms: Lemniscomys calidior (Thomas and Wroughton 1908); Lemniscomys dorsalis (Smith 1845); Lemniscomys fitzsimonsi Roberts 1915; Lemniscomys maculosus (Osgood 1910); Lemniscomys mearnsi Heller 1914; Lemniscomys phaeotis (Thomas 1910); Lemniscomys sabiensis Roberts 1946; Lemniscomys sabulatus Thomas 1927; Lemniscomys spinalis Thomas 1916; Lemniscomys zuluensis Roberts 1931. Distribution: N Namibia, South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West provinces; de Graaff, 1997 d; Taylor, 1998), E Swaziland, Zimbabwe, C and N Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and S Kenya; range inadequately resolved. Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc). Discussion: Once included in L. griselda (G. M. Allen, 1939), but now considered a distinct species most closely related to L. griselda and L. roseveari (Van der Straeten, 1980 b); see account of L. griselda. Karyotype (2n = 54, FN = 64) for samples from NE Tanzania reported by Fadda et al. (2001 b). Populations in Southern African Subregion reviewed by de Graaff (1997 d).
