Synonyms: Lasiurus (Lasiurus) funebris Fitzinger 1870; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) noveboracensis Erxleben 1777; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) quebecensis Yourans 1930; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) rubellus Palisot de Beauvois 1796; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) rubra Ord 1815; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) rufus Wardern 1820; Lasiurus (Lasiurus) tesselatus Rafinesque 1818. Distribution: E North America, Bermuda. Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc). Discussion: Subgenus Lasiurus, borealis species group. Does not include blossevillii, frantzii, teliotis, and varius; see Schmidly and Hendricks (1984), Baker et al. (1988 a), and Morales and Bickham (1995). Does not include degelidus (Baker et al., 1988 a) but might include minor. Does not include pfeifferi; see Morales and Bickham (1995). See Shump and Shump (1982 a) but note that they included blossevillii and its synonyms in borealis.
