Synonyms: Abrothrix bacchante (Thomas 1902); Abrothrix cayllomae (Thomas 1901); Abrothrix cruceri (Thomas 1901); Abrothrix inambarii (Thomas 1901); Abrothrix inornatus (Thomas 1917); Abrothrix ochrotis (Sanborn 1947); Abrothrix pulcherrimus (Thomas 1897); Abrothrix pyrrhotis (Thomas 1894); Abrothrix scalops (Thomas 1884); Abrothrix sodalis (Thomas 1913). Distribution: Altiplano, about 2200-5000 m, from C Perú (see Arana-Cardó and Ascorra, 1994) to W Bolivia and NW Argentina. Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc) as Chroeomys jelskii. Discussion: Revised by Sanborn (1947 b); Anderson (1997) observed Sanborn’s subspecific boundaries for Bolivian samples. Patton and Smith (1992) questioned whether chromatically highly differentiated northern and southern populations really belong to a single species.
