Abstract

El equilibrio geopolítico mundial construido tras la Guerra Fría parecía asentarse sobre bases sólidas, una vez consolidada la disolución definitiva de la Unión Soviética en el bienio transcurrido entre 1989 y 1991. Incluso los más optimistas en la «potencia vencedora» del conflicto bipolar, Estados Unidos, se aventuraban a augurar unnuevo mundo en el que el poderío de este país sería en adelante incontestado. Por ello, a su juicio, podía hablarse, como hiciera Francis Fukuyama, de El fin de la Historia tal y como dicha historia se había conocido hasta entonces, esto es, una sucesión de tensiones entre dos grandes bloques que, en más de una ocasión, había amenazado con hacer saltar al mundo por los aires en medio de la tan temida conflagración nuclear. La nueva era, pues, que se inauguraba a partir del 25 de diciembre de 1991, día en que Mijaíl Gorbachov declaraba disuelta la Unión Soviética, estaría dominada por Estados Unidos, y consistiría en la consolidación del que entonces ya se considerabaúnico modelo civilizatorio posible, en tanto que supuesto triunfador de un conflicto que, por otra parte, apenas había traspasado el ámbito de la diplomacia, el espionaje y el contraespionaje.
