Los vaciados de Velázquez en la Academia de San Fernando

Abstract

Los dos viajes de Velázquez a Italia han concitado el interés de los estudiosos del artista. En relación con el primero (1629-1630) surge la figura de Luigi Amidani, pintor de los Farnese, quien recibió el encargo de acompañarle. Más tarde dejó Parma y vino a España, donde se han encontrado obras suyas, entre las que destaca la serie de los «Martirios de los apóstoles» recientemente identificada y que conserva la Academia de San Fernando. También de ese primer viaje la Academia posee la única copia conocida de Velázquez: La Última Cena de Tintoretto. Durante el segundo viaje (1649-1651), con la misión de adquirir vaciados de esculturas para el Alcázar, fue esencial la colaboración del agente Juan de Córdoba. De sus actividades y sus relaciones con el pintor se hacen importantes aportaciones en este estudio. Su retrato por Velázquez, conservado en la Pinacoteca de los Museos Capitolinos de Roma, se presenta con la nueva atribución por primera vez en España. Junto a él se exponen cinco de los vaciados en yeso traídos de Italia, de los que conocemos los pormenores de los contratos firmados por Velázquez, Córdoba y el escultor Giuliano Finell.
