Thoughts on Groundstone Technology in the Light of Uşak Protohistoric Period Surveys

Abstract

This study, which focuses on the ground stone shaft-hole axes, flat axes, chisels and hoe recovered within the scope of Uşak Protohistoric Period Surveys Project [UDPAP], aims to examine a number of ground stone tools that shed light on the Protohistoric period human life in Uşak. The project was carried out regionally in Banaz and Merkez districts covering the eastern, central and northern parts of Uşak province. The historical period from the Neolithic to the end of the Late Iron Age is the chronological boundary of the project. The settlement activities, material cultures and inter-regional relations in the region during this period are evaluated. In this study, the variety of volcanic stones used in the production of ground stone tools is interpreted and inferences are made about the methods used in ground stone technology by the people who lived in the protohistory of the region. The distance of the assemblage from the raw material deposits, its typology, production and repair technology were taken into consideration.
