Scopaeus velutinus Motschulsky, 1858 This species was described from ‘Indes orientales’ by Motschulsky (1858: 642, 643). The record for Borneo (Bernhauer 1922: 230) may go back to two male Bornean specimens (Pagate, Telang 1881, leg. Grabowsky) of an undescribed species in the Fauvel collection (ISNB) identified as Scopaeus decipiens Kraatz, 1859, which is considered a synonym of S. velutinus since Fauvel (1904: 53). Type studies revealed that this synonymy is incorrect. Both S. velutinus and S. decipiens are absent from Indonesia. The undescribed species from Borneo is, however, closely related to the ‘true’ S. decipiens from India.
