TEACHERS' ROLE AND STRESS RELATIONSHIP: A REVIEW

Abstract

Stress has emerged across the globe as a major concern because of its high potential to cause serious damage, not only to an individual’s health but his work performance as well. Substantial amount of research whether conducted in the fields like, Health, Education, Management, Psychology and Sociology, indicates that an element of stress is present in every profession. Role stress which finds its roots predominantly in the socio-psychological literature has not been explored significantly for the relationship it shares with the profession of teaching. This paper therefore is an attempt to turn the spot light on role stress research and illustrate various dimensions of the relationship this variable shares with teaching profession. Based on a review of psychological, sociological and educational literature, the paper attempts to analyze some dimensions that make an essential part of this relationship, besides ascertaining the future trends in the area of stress. Keywords: role stress; work performance; teaching profession
