
Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos (Bleeker 1856) — Grey reef shark Status at New Ireland. First recorded from Lihir Group, Namatamai District, New Ireland by Fry et al. (2006: 130). Confirmed records from an observer program on shark longline vessels in 2014 (NFA and CSIRO, unpublished data); commonly observed by dive operators and recreational fishers; caught by artisanal fishers (W. White). Specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 10 Oct. 2007 and 22 June 2008. A set of jaws collected from Cape Saint George in 1965 (KFRS E047D) recently confirmed as this species (White & Ko'ou 2018: 32). Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa and Mascarenes east to Marquesas and Easter islands, north to South China Sea and Hawaiian Islands, south to Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found on coral reefs, often in deeper areas near drop-offs to the open sea, and in shallow lagoons adjacent to areas of strong currents, as well as over deeper rocky reefs, 0–280 m depth. Marine.
