Buyck (1988) studied the species complex Diderma spumariodies - globosum and differentiated between two varieties, the var. globosum, with sporocarpic sporophores, prominent columella, and spores 9–12 µm in diameter, and the var. europaeum Buyck, with generally plasmodicarpic sporophores, columella reduced to a widening at the base, and 9–12 µm in diameter. The Peruvian specimens match the var. globosum.
