Works of this type found in many museums (including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Royal Cast Collection in Copenhagen) are in fact reproductions (of varying sizes and materials) of an original commissioned to Sally by Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, for the castle of Bellevue (built in 1750 and offered by the king to her mistress).
