Choosing Open Access for Books: Myths and Truths Beyond the BPC

Choosing Open Access for Books: Myths and Truths Beyond the BPC

Abstract

This presentation addresses some of the common questions, concerns and myths academics hold around open access publication. It outlines the work that a new UK nonprofit, the Open Book Collective, is doing to provide authors with reputable high quality open access book publication. It was delivered by Judith Fathallah at the Oxford Forum for Open Scholarship, 2025 (OxFOS25) as part of 'Lightning Talks: the latest in open research' (Tuesday 11th March 2025, 5pm-6.30pm, in person, Lecture Theatre, Weston Library). Judith Fathallah works on the Open Book Futures research project, a Copim Community project.

The Open Book Futures project is co-funded by Arcadia and Research England Development (RED) Fund (UKRI). Arcadia is a charitable foundation that works to protect nature, preserve cultural heritage and promote open access to knowledge. Since 2002 Arcadia has awarded more than $1 billion to organizations around the world. Research England Development (RED) Fund (UKRI) is a fund supporting institutional-level innovative projects in research and knowledge exchange including collaborations between education providers and between education providers and business.
