Abstract

Defined as "theater of neighbors for neighbors, of the community for the community" the Argentine community theater was born in 1983 at the end of the last civic-military dictatorship in the Catalinas Sur neighborhood, La Boca, Buenos Aires. What once was an experience limited to a single group, today is a social movement made up of more than 40 groups throughout the country united in the National Community Theater Network. Said theatrical praxis rescues the traditions of popular theater and works with the rescue of collective memory and identity. In this article we inquire about the procedures carried out by the groups to build and stage their shows. Our theoretical framework is based on the concepts of community theater, identity and collective memory. Our methodology is qualitative, we carry out ethnographic fieldwork in the roles of participant observer and observer participant. We work with written documents (news in the media, theatrical scripts, dossiers written by the groups, etc.) and with audiovisual documents (productions of the groups themselves or records made by third parties). Finally, we conducted interviews to find out the history of the group and the biographies of certain members in order to carry out a rescue of Oral History given the limited availability of written documentation.
