The efforts which had been done to retrofit the kindergarten “Plappersnut” in Wismar has been described in the periodical BAUPHYSIK 6/2005, when the team of this retrofitting program (sponsored by the German Minister of Economy) won an award of this periodical. Therefore this contribution will focus on the following specialties in building physics: • Methods to reduce the energy use in this building and comparison of the measured and calculated energy effort of the old and retrofitted building • Thermal behavior of the unheated transparent hall between the two buildings, its problems and solutions • Construction and installation of two Vakuum-Insulation-Panel-(VIP-) systems installed at the front-walls of the buildings, its tests in the climate chamber and calculations especially due to thermal bridges and there influence on the energy losses as well as long-time measurements and observations of durability (cracks). After finishing the construction work, • a two years monitoring on building physics and specific tests on radiation and convection have been made. Additional theoretical investigations shall lead to a PhD-thesis • this building has been well accepted by the children and the staff, so another kindergarten of the same type will be retrofitted with the results of the first one. Information about this will be given too.
