El presente artículo tiene como propósito discutir los principales problemas teóricos y metodológicos que surgen del reciente libro de William Labov (Principies of Linguistic Change. Vol. II Social Factors), el cual constituye hoy en día la principal propuesta heurística y hermenéutica sobre la variación y el cambio como fenómenos interconectados. Se analizan aquí los problemas referidos a las variables estables y al cambio en curso, además de otras cuestiones afines. Tales problemas son relevantes tanto para la sociolingüística cuanto para la lingüística histórica y la lingüística general.
