Cryptotermes colombianus a new drywood termite and distribution record of Cryptotermes in Colombia

Abstract

Une nouvelle espèce de termite de bois sec (Kalotermitidae), Cryptotermes colombianus, est décrite et de nouveaux enregistrements pour Cryptotermes cylindroceps et Cryptotermes mangoldi sont présentés de la côte caribéenne de la Colombie. Cryptotermes colombianus est décrit à partir de deux soldats et de séquences génétiques. Cette espèce inhabituelle diffère sensiblement des autres espèces régionales de Cryptotermes par sa définition faible et discrète des cornes frontales et génales et son angle aigu des frons par rapport au sommet. Cryptotermes colombianus regroupés avec des espèces de la région éthiopienne et orientale et il est étroitement lié à Cryptotermes havilandi. Cryptotermes cylindroceps est largement distribué le long de la côte caribéenne colombienne, généralement associé au bois mort dans les habitats de mangrove. On le trouve également couramment dans les meubles en bois, constituant un parasite domestique important. Cryptotermes mangoldi est signalé pour la première fois dans la partie continentale des Caraïbes. Avec ces nouveaux records, il y a maintenant cinq espèces de Cryptotermes pour la Colombie, y compris les espèces nuisibles Cryptotermes brevis et Cryptotermes dudleyi. Cette nouvelle description porte le nombre de cryptotermes néotropicaux à un total de 34 espèces, dont 2 fossiles, 4 introduites et 28 endémiques.

Se describe una nueva especie de termita de madera seca (Kalotermitidae), Cryptotermes colombianus, y se presentan nuevos registros de Cryptotermes cylindroceps y Cryptotermes mangoldi de la costa caribeña de Colombia. Cryptotermes colombianus se describe a partir de dos soldados y secuencias genéticas. Esta especie inusual se diferencia notablemente de otras especies regionales de Cryptotermes por su definición débil y discreta de los cuernos frontal y genal y su ángulo agudo de los frons con respecto al vértice. Cryptotermes colombianus se agrupó con especies de la región etíope y oriental y está estrechamente relacionado con Cryptotermes havilandi. Cryptotermes cylindroceps está ampliamente distribuido a lo largo de la costa caribeña colombiana, comúnmente asociado con madera muerta en hábitats de manglares. También se encuentra comúnmente en los muebles de madera, constituyendo una importante plaga doméstica. Cryptotermes mangoldi se informa desde el continente caribeño por primera vez. Con estos nuevos registros, ahora hay cinco especies de Cryptotermes para Colombia, incluidas las especies de plagas Cryptotermes brevis y Cryptotermes dudleyi. Esta nueva descripción eleva el número de criptotermas neotropicales a un total de 34 especies, de las cuales 2 son fósiles, 4 introducidas y 28 endémicas.

A new species of drywood termite (Kalotermitidae), Cryptotermes colombianus, is described and new records for Cryptotermes cylindroceps and Cryptotermes mangoldi are presented from the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cryptotermes colombianus is described from two soldiers and genetic sequences. This unusual species differs noticeably from other regional Cryptotermes species for its weak and inconspicuous definition of the frontal and genal horns and its acute angle of the frons with respect to the vertex. Cryptotermes colombianus clustered with species from the Ethiopian and Oriental region and it is closely related to Cryptotermes havilandi. Cryptotermes cylindroceps is widely distributed along the Colombian Caribbean coast, commonly associated with dead wood in mangrove habitats. It also is commonly found in wooden furniture, constituting an important household pest. Cryptotermes mangoldi is reported from the Caribbean mainland for the first time. With these new records, there are now five Cryptotermes species for Colombia, including the pest species Cryptotermes brevis and Cryptotermes dudleyi. This new description raises the numbers of Neotropical Cryptotermes to a total of 34 species, of which 2 are fossils, 4 introduced, and 28 endemic.
