Abstract

Schon immer haben Bilder durch ihre Lebendigkeit und ihren dynamischen Charakter berührt. Doch wie vermögen unbewegte zweidimensionale Darstellungen solche Eindrücke hervorzurufen? Die Untersuchung geht den Ursachen dieser narrativen Wirkung von Bildern auf den Grund, die weit über die Frage hinausreicht, ob sie eine bestimmte Erzählung wiedergeben. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die reich dekorierten Kapellen der Privatgräber des ägyptischen Neuen Reiches (ca. 1550–1050 v. Chr.), aber auch die Bildprogramme der zeitgleichen Königsgräber und Tempel werden betrachtet. Dabei werden diverse Darstellungsmittel ägyptischer Künstler in den Blick genommen, von der kinetischen Ausarbeitung einzelner Figuren über die Schaffung kontinuierlicher Bildräume bis zur Schaffung komplexer Bildreihen. Durch die rezeptionsästhetische Kontextualisierung des Materials und seiner Wahrnehmung legt die Studie das gezielte Spiel mit der narrativen Wirkung der Bilder durch ihre Schöpfer offen. Sie wird abgeschlossen durch einen Blick auf verschiedene Anwendungsbereiche figürlicher Darstellungen, darunter auch das eigenständige Erzählen.
