El objetivo principal del proyecto es diseñar una metodología de evaluación de la potencialidad turística del territorio, especialmente la capacidad de este para acoger la práctica de actividades que forman parte del ecoturismo y el turismo activo.La metodología diseñada ha sido aplicada al ámbito geográfico de la Sierra de las Nieves, en la provincia de Málaga. No obstante, la misma podría ser aplicada en otros ámbitos de índole similar con las modificaciones pertinentes. El sistema parte del análisis territorial y del inventario de los recursos potencialmente turísticos. Toda la información que se genera es introducida en un SIG, para ser analizada y posteriormente representada cartográficamente. A partir de este punto se procede a diseñar y calcular los índices de potencialidad turística para cada municipio. Finalmente se generan mapas temáticos y se efectúa un análisis DAFO para valorar la situación actual y la potencialidad del sector turístico de la Sierra de las Nieves.La implementación de un SIG permite un análisis del sistema turístico de gran valor, convirtiéndose en una herramienta válida para la planificación del turismo, y su aplicación en el área de estudio demuestra que es una zona con grandes posibilidades, especialmente los municipios de Tolox y Yunquera por su capacidad para albergar actividades ecoturísticas y de turismo activo.The main objective of this project is to design a methodology for evaluating the tourism potential of the territory, especially its capacity to accommodate the practice of activities included in the definition of ecotourism and adventure tourism.The methodology has been applied to the area of Sierra de las Nieves, in the province of Málaga, however, it could be used in other areas of similar conditions with the appropriate changes. The system starts with a spatial analysis and the inventory of potential tourist resources. Then, all the information is introduced into a GIS. At this point we are able to design and calculate the index of tourism potential for each municipality. Finally, we generate thematic maps and make a SWOT analysis to evaluate the current situation and potential of tourism in the area of study.The implementation of a GIS with the main tourist resources, the tourist supply and the index of tourism potential, allows an analysis of the tourism system of great value to the planning and management process. Definitely, this paper proves that GIS is a valid tool for tourism planning and its implementation in the Sierra de las Nieves shows that it is a tourist area with important potential, especially the municipalities of Yunquera and Tolox because of its capacity to accommodate activities of ecotourism and adventure tourism.
