Hydrometeor particle size distribution data collected using a snow particle counter on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov in the Southern Ocean during the austral summer of 2016/17 as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

Abstract

Dataset abstract The data consist of the hydrometeor particle size distribution for particles with a size range (average diameter) from 36 to 490 μm (with the last bin including all detected particles larger than 490 μm) detecting the flux of snow, rain and other particles including sea spray passing through a photo-electric snow particle counter (SPC-95) installed on board the R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov as part of the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). Data were recorded from January to March 2017 in the Southern Ocean. Here we present the raw data set, generated by the SPC-95 Data Processing Device, which consists of the number of particles, classified into 64 size bins, passing through the snow particle counter with a time resolution of one second. Data are presented in daily files and have undergone some pre-processing. The data were collected as part of ACE project 18 aiming to estimate freshwater fluxes (particularly precipitation and blowing snow) and understand their contribution to surface freshening in the Southern Ocean. Dataset contents UYYMMDD_hhmmssSnow-XXX-1sec-org-YYYY.csv, data files, comma-separated values data_file_header.txt, metadata, text README.txt, metadata, text where XXX is the sensor code number and YYY is the CF serial number. The Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition was made possible by funding from the Swiss Polar Institute and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. We thank the crew of R/V Akademik Tryoshnikov for valuable support in instrument installation. These data were collected as part of the ACE Project 18, supported by grants from the SPI, the BNP Paribas Foundation, and the Swiss National Science Foundation. KL and the ACE project 18 were supported by Swiss National Science Foundation grant PZ00P2_142684. IG thanks FCT/ MCTES for the financial support to CESAM (UIDP/50017/2020+UIDB/50017/2020) and FCT project ATLACE (CIRCNA/CAC/0273/2019) through national funds.
