Field Measurement Plan 1

Authors: Peters, Jared L.; Wheeler, Andrew J.;
Abstract

This report establishes a strategy for collecting new data to improve Irish Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) assessments. It incorporates insights from experts in various academic and industrial fields. In this capacity, it does not entirely replace the research plan and work schedules being written for upcoming research cruises, but incorporates parts of those plans and helps inform upcoming expeditions to ensure compatibility with EirWind goals. Thus, descriptions of OWE data collection methods and how those methods have been used in planning upcoming research cruises are provided. This helps align future research to EirWind’s goals. In reviewing the available data required for planning a successful research cruise, several EirWInd reports were consulted, indicating that the EirWind project is producing deliverables that are useful to offshore data collection efforts that target OWE variables. With the help of these reports, care was taken to minimize any unnecessary duplication of existing (and accessible) data during future offshore data collection efforts. This also maximises the capacity for data standardization. This report also uses new oceanographic and geologic data collected by the EirWind project (during research cruise CV18034) to improve future data collection efforts for Irish OWE developments. Through these data reviews, a general strategy for selecting data collection sites for OWE development has been described. This strategy has been employed for planning the upcoming EirWind research cruise (CV19023), which is also described in sufficient detail to illustrate the logic of the research site selection methodology. Research will be conducted during the upcoming cruise from the RV Celtic Voyager. A science crew will consist largely of experienced research assistants and will be led by an EirWind WP2 researcher. Research will focus on acquiring two types of data: oceanographic and geologic. Oceanographic data will be collected using a multi-beam echo sounder system and by deploying a series of acoustic Doppler current profiler and wave gauge buoys. Geologic data will be collected using various sediment sampling techniques and sub-bottom geophysics. The CV19023 research cruise will last for seven days (16/09/2019 – 22/09/2019). As depicted in the figure below, most of the operational time is required for transit, while oceanographic and sedimentologic data collection efforts are allocated roughly equal time. Future applications for any data collected on upcoming cruises has also been strategized. These strategies include data gap reductions and advanced GIS model constructions and calibrations. Lastly, this report discusses the role of potential new data generated by future offshore research (e.g. CV19023) in the context of the overarching goals and workflow of the EirWind project. This context suggests that the ongoing efforts of EirWind’s WP2 are likely to help progress OWE development through data standardisations and metholdological advances.
