Abstract

Tetrarogidae Ablabys macracanthus (Bleeker, 1852) —Spiny waspfish STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by A. Berberian. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Maldives and Andaman Islands east to Philippines, south to New Guinea. Found in areas with sand, rubble and weed adjacent to coral reefs, 1– 20 m. Marine. Ablabys taenianotus (Cuvier [ex Commerson], 1829) —Cockatoo waspfish STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed by A. Berberian. CAS material (CAS 48608). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Seychelles, Madagascar and Mascarenes; eastern Indonesia east to Philippines and Fiji, north to Taiwan, south to Kimberleys (Western Australia), Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found in areas with sand, rubble and weed adjacent to coral reefs, 20– 78 m. Marine. Tetraroge barbata (Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829) —Bearded roguefish STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Parenti & Allen (1991: 318). AMS and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia and Philippines east to Palau and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia. Benthic in muddy inshore water including mangrove areas, penetrating estuaries and freshwater rivers and streams, 0– 10 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Tetraroge niger (Cuvier in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1829) —Black roguefish STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1987b: 205). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands. Benthic in muddy inshore water including mangrove areas, penetrating estuaries and freshwater rivers and streams, 0– 10 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
