Abstract

Descriptions, illustrations and short diagnoses of the species of Fissidens reported from St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean, are presented. One new species, Fissidens translucens (subgenus Aloma) and one new subspecies, Fissidens curvatus Hornsch. subsp. sanctae-helenae are described. F. darntyi Schimp. ex Besch., F. elegans Brid., F. porrectus Mitt., F. pygmaeus Hornsch., F. serratus Mull.Hal., F. taxifolius Hedw., F. taylorii Mull.Hal., and F. tenellus Hook.f. & Wilson are reported from St Helena for the first time. A key to the species, notes on habitats and distribution, and references to other descriptions and illustrations are provided. A neotype is proposed for F. chioneurus Mull.Hal. The name F. helenicus is replaced by the older name F. chioneurus.
