Abstract

In the last years, studies related to the analysis of lithic technology in late societies of the Northwestern Argentina (NOA) presented a greater theoretical development for the interpretation of the archaeological record. In this opportunity, the results of the study of the lithic artifacts coming from the last campaigns carried out in the Villavil 1 and Villavil 2 archaeological sites, north of the Hualfín valley, Catamarca are presented. Research carried out so far supports for Villavil 1 site occupations both during the Middle Formative (ca. 400 - 900 AD) and in the Regional Developments until the Inca presence in the valley (ca. 900 - 1532 AD). On the other hand, the Villavil 2 site shows a later occupation, during the period of Regional Developments and for Inca occupation. This is evidenced by radiocarbon dating obtained and the pottery styles identified. This paper presents the analysis of lithic material recovered on the surface at both sites. This allowed to define the strategies of production, use and discard of lithic artifacts, characterized by a tendency to expediency, which is exemplified by the use of a raw material of immediate origin and a low investment of labor in the production of the artifacts. The results coincide with a sedentary lifestyle and agriculturaltype productive activities.
