Abstract One hundred and forty-four patients who had chronic renal failure were examined for the presence of pingueculae. A significantly greater incidence was found between the ages of 20 to 40 in these patients compared with an age- and sex-matched control group. There was no difference in sex-incidence or between those treated with haemodialysis or transplantation. The levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium, and inorganic phosphate in the plasma were not related to the presence of pingueculae. Detailed structural andchemical analyses of pingueculae are described.
